Performing a SIM Subsidy Unlock

Global System for Mobile (GSM) Communications describes the various technologies used in second generation cellular phones. The system serves more than 5 billion people across 212 nations, making it the most popular standard for cellular networks. These GSM phones utilize a SIM card or Subscriber Identity Module, which contains user account information.

Network providers in most territories use the subsidy lock feature to restrict the usage of mobile devices to specific countries or network providers. Mobile devices can be locked to accept only SIM cards based on the International Mobile Subscriber Identity. This means that subsidy lock restricts mobile phone usage by country code; mobile network codes; and mobile station identification number or MSIN, wherein only one SIM card can work with that mobile device.

Most mobile devices can be unlocked with subsidy unlock, which enables it to work with any GSM. However, the phone may display the original branding and not support certain features of the new carrier. Many network providers SIM lock their phones so that they may offer mobile devices at discounted rates in exchange for a contract. This contract requires the client to pay for the use of the network for a specified period of time, often one to three years.

Mobile devices can be unlocked by entering a code provided by the network operator. Usually, a subsidy unlock is permanent. Certain third party providers provide subsidy unlock services to clients by providing them an unlock Sidekick code. The unlock code disables the carrier SIM card locked to the phone, freeing the client from contractual obligations stipulated with the original carrier.

Locked mobile devices usually display a message if a restricted SIM is used, requesting for an unlock code. Mobile devices will display messages like “Insert correct SIM card” or “Enter Unlocking Code” on the screen if the incorrect SIM is used. Unlock codes are processed by the mobile device and is typically an algorithm such as a one way hash or trapdoor function. Algorithms based on the international mobile equipment identity (IMEI) number can be unlocked using software that generates an unlock Sidekick 2008 code.

Third party providers can perform a subsidy unlock once the client provides their mobile device IMEI number, as well as country and operator details. This can be submitted by email or through the provider’s website. The third party provider then issues the unlock Sidekick code.
